GNOSTICKÝ SPIS ZOSTRIANOS

¹ Kniha slávy věčně živých slov, kterou jsem napsal já Zostrianos a Iolaos, přišel jsem na svět kvůli svým současníkům a potomkům, živým vyvoleným.² Bůh pravdy žije v pravdě, v poznání a věčném světle.³ Poté, co jsem intelektuálně opustil tělesnou temnotu ve mně i psychický chaos a žádostivou ženskost v temnotě – neboť jsem se o ni nestaral – a poté, co jsem objevil bezmeznost své hmotné přirozenosti, odsoudil jsem mrtvé stvoření ve mně a vnímavého vládce světa, mocně jsem hlásal celistvost těm, kdo mají nesouvisející části.⁴ Ačkoli jsem jejich cesty zkusil jen krátce, pokud mě nutnost zrození přivedla k viditelnosti, nikdy jsem s nimi nebyl spokojen, vždycky jsem se od nich odděloval, neboť jsem vznikl svatým – ač plodným – zrozením.⁵ Když jsem napravil svou bezhříšnou duši, pak jsem posílil intelektuálního ducha ve mně a probudil se z temného spánku, našel svého otcovského Boha.⁶ Ačkoli jsem na tom pracoval všemi způsoby, byl jsem posílen Svatým Duchem vyšším než bůh.⁷ Usadil se na mně samotném, když jsem se zlepšoval, a viděl jsem dokonalé Dítě – kdo je a co má – často a různě se mi zjevoval jako souhlasná jednota, když jsem hledal mužského otce všeho, co je myšlenkové i vnímavé, specifické i rodové, částečné i celé, obsahující i obsažené, tělesné i netělesné, esenciální i hmotné a věci patřící ke všemu tomu, a Existenci smíšenou s nimi i s bohem tohoto dokonalého dítěte, nezrozeným Kalyptem, dokonce s mocí ve všem.⁸ Teď ohledně Existence: Jak mohou bytosti – protože jsou z éonu těch, kdo pocházejí z neviditelného, nedělitelného, samozplozeného Ducha jako trojformní nezrozené obrazy – mít původ lepší než Existence, předexistovat všechno tohle a přesto vzniknout ve světě?⁹ Jak ti v jeho přítomnosti se vším tím vznikají z Dobra nahoře? Jaká je to moc a příčina, jaké je místo toho Jednoho? Jaký je jeho princip? Jak jeho produkt patří k němu i ke všemu tomu?¹⁰ Jak, jsoucí prostá jednota, se liší od sebe sama, když existuje jako Existence, Forma a Blaženost, a živě živý dává sílu?¹¹ Jak se Existence, která nemá bytí, objevila v moci, která bytí má?¹² Přemýšlel jsem o těchto věcech, abych je pochopil, podle zvyku svého rodu jsem je denně obětoval bohu svých otců.¹³ Chválil jsem je všechny, neboť moji předkové a předci, které jsem hledal, tak se našli.¹⁴ Já jsem nepřestal hledat místo odpočinku hodné mého ducha, kde bych nebyl spoután ve vnímavém světě.¹⁵ Pak, když jsem byl hluboce znepokojen a smutný kvůli malosti kolem mě, odvážil jsem se jednat a vydat se divokým zvířatům pouště na násilnou smrt.¹⁶ Stál přede mnou anděl poznání věčného světla a řekl mi: „Zostriane, proč jsi zešílel, jako bys nevěděl o velkých věčných bytostech nahoře? A copak nevíš, že jsi vyvolený, a proto jsi byl informován, co máš dělat, abys byl teď zachráněn? Nikdy se nestávej ničitelem, ani nevěnuj pozornost těm, které znáš, abys zachránil jiné, které vyvolí Otec nahoře. Myslíš si, že jsi otec svého rodu? Nebo že Iolaos je tvůj otec? Máš božského anděla, který ti ukázal cestu skrze svaté lidi! Pojď a překroč tyto sféry! Vrátíš se k nim jindy, abys hlásal poselství živému rodu, a tak zachránil hodné a posílil vyvolené. Velký je boj tohoto věku, ale čas ve světě je krátký.“¹⁷

Když to řekl, velmi rychle a velmi rád jsem s ním vystoupil na velký světelný oblak, nechal svou utvářenou podobu na zemi, hlídanou slávami.¹⁸ Vyhnuli jsme se celému světu a třinácti eonům v něm i jejich andělským zástupům. THE GNOSTIC WRITING OF ZOSTRIANOS

¹ The Book of Glory of the Ever-Living Words, written by I, Zostrianos and Iolaos, I came into the world for the sake of my contemporaries and descendants, the living elect.² The God of truth lives in truth, in knowledge and in eternal light.³ After I had intellectually left the physical darkness within me, as well as the psychic chaos and lustful femininity in the darkness – for I did not care about it – and then, Since I discovered the boundlessness of my material nature, I have condemned the dead creature in me and the perceptive ruler of the world, I have powerfully proclaimed wholeness to those who have unrelated parts.⁴ Although I have tried their ways only briefly, if the necessity of birth has brought me to visibility, I have never been satisfied with them, I have always separated myself from them, for I have come into being a holy—though fruitful—birth.⁵ When I have corrected my sinless soul, then I strengthened the intellectual spirit within me, and awakened from my dark sleep, found my fatherly God.⁶ Though I worked on it in every way, I was strengthened by a Holy Spirit higher than God.⁷ He settled on me as I improved, and I saw the perfect Child—who he is and what he has—often and variously appearing to me as a consensual unity, when I was looking for the male father of all that is mental and perceptive, specific and generic, partial and whole, containing and contained, corporeal and incorporeal, essential and material, and things belonging to all these, and Existence mixed with them and with the god of this perfect child, the unborn Calyptus, even with power in everything.⁸ Now concerning Existence: How can beings – because they are from the aion of those who come from the invisible, indivisible, self-begotten Spirit as threefold unborn images—to have a origin better than Existence, to pre-exist all of these things, and yet to arise in the world?⁹ How do those in His presence, with all this, arise from the Good above? What is this power and cause, what is it instead of the One? What is its principle? How does its product belong to it and to all this?¹⁰ How does the existent simple unity differ from itself, when it exists as Existence, Form, and Bliss, and the living one gives power?¹¹ How did Existence, which has no being, appear in the power that has being?¹² I have meditated on these things in order to understand them, according to the custom of my race I have offered them daily to the god of my fathers.¹³ I have praised them all, for my ancestors and the ancestors whom I sought were thus found.¹⁴ I did not cease to seek a resting place worthy of my spirit, where I would not be bound in a receptive world.¹⁵ Then, when I was deeply troubled and sad about the smallness around me, I dared to act and give myself to the wild beasts of the desert to a violent death.¹⁶ The angel of the knowledge of eternal light stood before me and said to me: „Zostrian, why have you gone mad, as if you did not know about the great eternal beings above? And don’t you know that you are the chosen one, and therefore you have been informed what you must do to be saved now? Never become a destroyer, nor pay attention to those you know in order to save others who will be chosen by the Father above. Do you think you are the father of your family? Or that Iolaos is your father? You have a divine angel who showed you the way through holy people! Come and cross these spheres! You will return to them another time to preach the message to the living race, and thus save the good and strengthen the elect. Great is the struggle of this age, but the time in the world is short.“ ¹⁷ When he had said this, I very quickly and very gladly ascended with him into the great cloud of light, leaving my formed form on the earth, guarded by glories.¹⁸ We avoided the whole world and the thirteen aeons in it and their angelic hosts. We were not seen, but their ruler was disturbed by our passage, for our cloud of light, a being higher than all that is cosmic, was unspoken.¹⁹ Its beauty shines brightly, it has the ability to guide pure spirits, it exists as a quickening spirit and intelligent reason—not like those things in the world of pliable matter and persuasive reason.²⁰ Then I knew that the power within me ruled the darkness, for it contains all the light.²¹ I was baptized there, received the image of the glories there, and became as one of them.²² I passed through the atmospheric sphere and passed copies of the Aeons after I had immersed myself in the living water seven times, once for each Aeon, without stopping until I had passed through them all at once.²³ I ascended to the actual Abode; I was baptized and left the world, ascended to the real Ascension, and was baptized there six times.²⁴ I passed through the sixth; I was strengthened from the same and ascended to the Self-begotten Aeons.²⁵ I stood there after seeing the really existing light of truth really existing from its self-begotten root with great angels and glories without number.²⁶ I was baptized in the name of the divine Autogenus by those powers who preside over the living water, Michar and Michaeus.²⁷ I was cleansed by the great Barpharanges.²⁸ I was glorified and written into glory.²⁹ I was sealed by those who who preside over these powers, Michar, Micaeus, Seldao, Elenos, and Zogenethlos.³⁰ I became a contemplative angel and stood on the first—that is, the fourth—aeon, together with the souls.³¹ I blessed the divine Autogenes and ancestor Pigeradamus, the eye of Autogenes, the first perfect man; and Seth Emmach Seth, son of Adamas, father of the immovable family; and the four lights, Armozel, Oroiael, Davith, and Eleleth; and Mirothea—she is the mother of Adamas—and Prophania—she is the mother of the Lights—and Plesithea, the mother of angels.³² I was baptized a second time in the name of the divine Autogenus by the same powers.³³ I became a male angel.³⁴ I stood on the second—that is, the third—aeon, together with the children of Seth, and blessed the same.³⁵ And I was baptized a third time in the name of the divine Autogenus by the same powers.³⁶ I became a holy angel and stood on the third—that is, the second—aeon And I have blessed the same ones.³⁷ And I have been baptized for the fourth time by the same powers.³⁸ I have become a perfect angel and have stood on the fourth – that is, the first – aeon, and I have blessed the same. Then I met Authruun, the angel of truth, who said to me: „Zostrian, you have come out of darkness, but now you are asking what is ahead of Existence.“ ¹⁸ And I answered, „Yes, I want to know the One, which is not one, but is above all.“ ¹⁹ And he said: „The One is the Great Invisible Spirit, which is not, but is; who has no name, but is the source of all names; which is not thought, but is the thinking of all.“²⁰ And I asked: „How is Barbela born from this One?“ ²¹ And Authrounios answered: „Barbelo is the first thought, the first light that reflects from the Invisible, like a shadow from light, but it is not a shadow – it is perfection.“ ²² And then I saw how from Barbelo was born Autogenes, the Self-begotten, who is threefold: existence, life, bliss.²³ And he is the bridge between the Invisible and the aeons, he is the one who begot Seth, the father of the immovable race.²⁴ And I asked, „Why is Seth chosen?“ And he said, „Because Seth is the one who did not submit to the world, who remained intact, who is the seed of truth in the midst of a lie.“ ²⁶ Then we ascended higher – to the Aeon of Life, where all is alive, where there is no death, only eternal movement.²⁷ There I was baptized in living water, which is not water, but knowledge.²⁸ And I was given the name: „He who sees“.²⁹ And then to the Aeon of Truth, where everything is true, where there is no deception.³⁰ There I saw the Four Lights: Armozel, Oroiael, Daveith, Eleleth – they are the guardians, they are the gates.³¹ And I have passed through every gate, I have blessed each and each has blessed me.³² And then to the Great Invisible Spirit Himself – there is nothing to say but the silence that speaks.³³ And in that silence I heard, „Zostrian, you are now one with us.“ ³⁴ And I became a light that is not seen, but that illuminates everything.³⁵ And then I came back—not because I had to, but to tell others.³⁶ And now, you who are reading: this is the way up, this is the way down, this is the way back.³⁷ Amen, amen, amen.
