Gnosticismus (z řec. gnózis – „poznání“) byl volně organizovaný nábožensko-filosofický směr, který kvetl v 1. a 2. století n. l. na pomezí pozdního Judaismu, Křesťanství a řecké filosofie (Gnosticism | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy) (Valentinus | Biography, Beliefs, Gnosticism, & Facts | Britannica). Pro Gnosticismus je typická nauka o dualistickém uspořádání skutečnosti – existenci dobrého, nejvyššího Boha na jedné straně a nedokonalého či zlého demiurga (tvůrce hmotného světa) na straně druhé – a víra, že spásy dosáhne člověk skrze tajné poznání (gnózi) božských mysterií (Valentinus | Biography, Beliefs, Gnosticism, & Facts | Britannica). Gnostici obecně pohlíželi na hmotný svět jako na výsledek tragického pádu či omylu v božské sféře: z plérómatu („plnosti“ božství) vyzařují postupně další božské bytosti (eóny), z nichž nejnižší zvaná Sophia (Moudrost) způsobila svým přehmatem vznik hmoty a zrodu nižšího boha – Demiurga, nevědomého stvořitele našeho nedokonalého světa (Gnosticism | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Lidská duše je podle gnostiků jiskrou božského světla uvězněnou v hmotě a spása spočívá v jejím navrácení do duchovního světa skrze probuzení poznáním pravdy.

Introduction

Gnosticism (from Gr. Gnosis – „knowledge“) was a loosely organized religious-philosophical movement that flourished in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD on the border of late Judaism, Christianity and Greek philosophy (Gnosticism | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy) (Valentinus | Biography, Beliefs, Gnosticism, & Facts | Britannica). Gnosticism is characterized by the doctrine of a dualistic arrangement of reality – the existence of a good, supreme God on the one hand and an imperfect or evil demiurge (creator of the material world) on the other – and the belief that salvation is achieved through the secret knowledge (gnosis) of the divine mysteries (Valentinus | Biography, Beliefs, Gnosticism, & Facts | Britannica). Gnostics generally viewed the material world as the result of a tragic fall or mistake in the divine realm: from the pleroma („fullness“ of divinity) gradually emanate other divine beings (eons), the lowest of which, called Sophia (Wisdom), caused the emergence of matter and the birth of a lesser god – the Demiurge, the unconscious creator of our imperfect world (Gnosticism | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). The human soul, according to the Gnostics, is a spark of divine light imprisoned in matter, and salvation lies in its return to the spiritual world through awakening through the knowledge of truth.
